How to pay IAAI from Nigeria

If you have successfully won a vehicle on IAA, the following step is to make a payment. For buyers outside the United States, particularly Nigerians, the situation is different: paying IAAI from Nigeria entails overcoming bank delays, FX shortages, and documentation requirements that do not coincide with IAA’s payment deadlines.

IAA (Insurance Auto Auctions), also known as IAAI, allows bidders 3 business days (auction day plus 2 days) to settle payment following a purchase. Meeting a deadline from Nigeria is rarely easy. You must complete a Form M, provide supporting documentation, and wait for your bank to approve and allot foreign exchange. When you factor in intermediary routing, processing queues, and compliance checks, it takes 5 to 7 working days for the payment to arrive, which is long past the IAA’s deadline.

Because the window is so tight, many dealers skip the bank altogether. They buy dollars on the parallel market from aboki vendors at inflated rates just to get their hands on FX faster. But even after sourcing the funds, they still have to be deposited into a bank account before a payment request can be submitted. So they end up paying more for the currency and still losing time on the deposit and processing side.

If you miss IAA’s payment deadline, you risk penalties that can go as high as 15% of the sale price or a minimum of $1,000.

To understand how to pay IAAI from Nigeria, you must first determine which payment methods are available and which ones are effective for Nigerian buyers.

IAA Payment Options

Credit/Debit Cards

IAA takes all major credit cards except American Express. Payments can be made at IAAI.com, the IAA Buyer App, or at any IAA branch. The daily limit for public accounts is $2,500, whereas licensed accounts can have higher limitations. There is also a processing fee for card transactions, and account holders can add up to three cards to My Auction Centre.

The catch is that you must have 1 full year of purchase history on your IAA account before you can use a card for online payments. Even if you meet the threshold, most Nigerian bank-issued cards have limited overseas spending limits and are frequently denied for high-value purchases. The name on the card must also match the registered buyer’s name; third-party cards are not accepted.

PayPal

PayPal is available to both US and non-US buyers via IAAI.com and the IAA Buyer App. However, Nigerian buyers face well-documented risks.

Nigerian PayPal accounts have a long history of unexpected limits, frozen funds, and permanent bans, often without explanation. Users have reported account suspensions in the middle of transactions, funds being held for up to 180 days, and verification documents leading to account closures. These troubles have persisted for years and remain a major complaint among Nigerian users despite the recent partnership with Paga.

The risk of paying IAAI is that if PayPal blocks your account or flags your transaction, you may miss IAA’s three-day payment deadline while waiting for a settlement that could take weeks. PayPal’s exchange rate markups and fees on large transactions also make it an expensive method of paying for autos.

I-Pay

I-Pay is IAA’s electronic check system. It transfers funds instantly from a linked US bank account with no additional fees, making it one of the most convenient options on the platform.

The limitation of using I-Pay from Nigeria is that it is only available to licensed business accounts with a US-based bank account, and you must provide a bank letter from a US-based bank.

MoneyGram & Western Union

MoneyGram and Western Union are accepted, but only in actual US locations. MoneyGram has a $9,000 transaction limit and is not available in Walmart locations. Western Union’s restrictions vary by location. Neither can be completed remotely from Nigeria.

Financing

IAA partners with several financing companies to offer floor plan options. This allows dealers to maximize purchasing power and manage cash flow around their business cycle.

However, financing is only available to US-based licensed dealers. International buyers do not qualify.

International Wire Transfer (Recommended for Nigerian Buyers)

Wire transfers are the most convenient payment method for Nigerian purchasers on IAA. Unlike the other methods mentioned above, it does not require an agent/middleman to pay for you, a physical presence in the United States, or a year of purchasing history on your IAA account.

There are no daily transaction limits, payment size restrictions, or additional processing fees, unlike with credit cards or PayPal. IAA accepts wire transfers from anywhere in the world for any amount.

IAAI’s 2026 Wire Transfer Policy

As of June 2025, IAAI no longer accepts third-party wire transfers. This means the name on the wire must match the registered business name, the account owner, or an additional bidder listed on the IAAI account. If you’ve been paying through someone else’s account  (a friend in the US, a broker, or an agent), that no longer works.

This policy change is a big deal for Nigerian importers who relied on third parties to make payments on their behalf.

With digital payment platforms like Clea, it is now easier and faster to pay IAA without visiting your bank, as payments are made in your registered personal or business name.

How to Pay IAAI From Nigeria Using Clea

Step 1: Log In to Your IAAI Account

Go to iaai.com and log in. Navigate to your Won Vehicles section, then select the To Be Paid tab. This shows you all the vehicles you’ve won that still need payment.

Step 2: Select the Vehicle You Want to Pay For

Tick the checkbox next to the vehicle (or vehicles) you want to pay for. Once selected, the total amount due will appear at the bottom-right of the screen.

Take note of this total. You’ll need it when you convert your naira.

Step 3: Download the Wire Transfer Information

Just above the total amount displayed, you’ll see an option to download the wire transfer information as a PDF. Download this document. It contains the beneficiary details you’ll need to set up IAAI as a payee on Clea – including the bank name, account number, and routing number.

Keep this PDF handy.

Step 4: Create and Fund Your Clea Account

If you haven’t already, head to tryclea.com and create an account. You can also download the Clea app from the Google Play Store or App Store. Complete a one-time KYC verification.

Note that the name on your Clea account must match the name on your IAAI member profile to process payments successfully.

Next, fund your Clea wallet via a local bank transfer in Naira or via Stablecoins. This usually reflects within minutes.

Step 5: Add IAAI as a Beneficiary on Clea

Open the Clea app and go to the Beneficiaries section.

Click +New to add IAAI as a beneficiary using the details from the wire transfer PDF you downloaded.

Fill in the profile by inputting the name, industry, address, and others as seen on the page. Then click Continue to Account Details.

Enter the account and routing number, and other bank details as they appear on the IAAI wire transfer information. Then, click Continue to Review.

A few things to pay attention to here:

  • Make sure the account number and account name are entered exactly as they appear on the PDF.
  • If the routing number is correct, the bank name will be generated automatically by Clea so you can use that as a quick way to confirm you’ve entered the right details.
  • Choose Fedwire as the payment method when inputting the details.

Once everything checks out, go ahead and complete the beneficiary setup by submitting.

Step 6: Convert Your Naira to USD

Go back to the Clea home screen. From your Naira wallet balance, tap Convert. Enter the amount you need in USD.

Convert Naira to Dolllars
💡Add an extra $50 to $100 on top of your IAAI invoice total. This covers wire transfer fees when making payments.

Tap Continue, review the exchange rate, and confirm. Your naira gets converted to USD in your Clea wallet instantly.

Step 7: Send the Payment to IAAI

From the Clea home screen, tap Send.

Search and select IAA beneficiary you just added and tap Continue.

Enter the total amount you’re paying to IAA.

You’ll then be prompted to upload a document; this is where you upload the wire transfer PDF you downloaded from IAA earlier.

Now here’s the part that matters most: IAA requires that all wires include the vehicle purchase details and your buyer number. In the reference number field, type this:

Vehicle purchase for Buyer #(your buyer number)

Replace the bracketed part with your actual IAAI buyer number. This ensures IAAI can match your payment to your account without delays.

Tap Continue, review all the details one more time, and select Confirm and Send.

Step 8: Enter Your PIN, and You’re Done

Input your Clea transaction PIN to authorize the payment. That’s it.

You’ll receive a notification once your payment has been sent to IAAI, which typically takes 5 to 30 minutes. After IAAI confirms receipt and applies the funds to your account, you’ll get an email, and your vehicle will be released for pickup or shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I send the wire without my buyer’s number?

IAAI won’t automatically match the payment to your account. You’ll need to email [email protected] with your payment receipt and buyer number so they can apply it manually. This can delay things, so always include your buyer number in the reference.

Can I pay for multiple IAAI vehicles in one wire transfer?

Yes. On IAAI’s dashboard, select all the vehicles you want to pay for before downloading the wire transfer PDF. The total will reflect all selected vehicles. Just make sure the reference includes your buyer number.

Does Clea send the wire in my name or theirs?

Clea sends the payment in your registered business name. This is important because IAAI no longer accepts third-party wires. Your Clea account name should match the name on your IAAI registration.

How long does it take for IAAI to receive the payment?

The wire transfer from Clea is processed within 5 to 30 minutes. IAAI may take 1 to 24 hours to verify and apply the funds to your buyer account, though it may be faster.

What if my payment is delayed or doesn’t show up on IAAI?

First, check the status on Clea. You can track your payment in real time. If the funds have left Clea but haven’t been reflected on IAAI after 48 hours, email [email protected] with a copy of your payment receipt and your buyer number. You can also contact Clea’s support team for help.

Is Clea only for IAAI and Copart?

No. Clea also supports payments to shipping agents, freight companies, and other foreign vendors. If you need to pay anyone in the US (or in 150+ other countries), you can do it through Clea.

What exchange rate does Clea use?

Clea offers real-time competitive exchange rates that update throughout the day. You’ll see the exact rate before you confirm the conversion, so there are no surprises.
